FED: Senate begins raucous debate on stimulus package =2
Senator Evans singled out Family First senator Steve Fielding for pushing an inquiry.
"Don't be a patsy for the Liberal Party," he said.
"If you claim to represent families, what you are doing is stopping us making those payments."
But Senator Fielding said the bills needed scrutiny, calling the government's position
"an absolute joke".
"What's wrong with including other experts to have a look at it?" he said.
"The Senate is doing what it was elected to do."

WA:Farm sheds destroyed in WA bushfire
PERTH, Dec 2 AAP - Fire crews are still battling an unpredictable and out of control
blaze in Western Australia's southwest as authorities warn homes and lives are in danger.
An emergency warning was issued on Thursday and remains in place on Friday for people
within a 5km radius from the junction of Milyeannup Coast Road and Woodarburrup Road in
the Shire of Nannup.
Two farm sheds have been destroyed in the bushfire, and one house and ancillary structures
have also received minor damage.
The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) says flames up to five metres high
are burning in tea-tree and paperbark wetlands. Boggy conditions are limiting access to
the area.
More than 38,800 hectares have been burnt so far.
About 85 career and volunteer Bush Fire Service, Department of Environment and Conservation,
Shire of Nannup and plantation industry firefighters are working to strengthen containment
lines.
They are backburning away from Milyeannup Coast Road.
Residents have been told that if the way is clear, they should leave immediately for
a safer place.
FESA advises those residents who are well prepared and planning to shelter in their
homes to start patrolling with their garden hoses and check for spot fires.
If residents are not at home, it is too dangerous to return now, FESA says.
A "watch and act" alert also remains in place for west of Lake Quitjup, as well as
Black Point and White Point roads.
A fire has entered private property and Gingilup Swamps Nature Reserve west of D'Entrecasteaux
National Park in the Shire of Nannup.
A watch and act alert also remains near Molloy Island and East Augusta in the Shire
of Augusta-Margaret River.
There is a possible threat to lives and homes in these areas and residents have been
warned to leave or get ready to actively defend their properties.

FED:NBN rivals should be blocked: Labor
By Stephen Johnson
CANBERRA, March 17 AAP - The company building the $36 billion national broadband network
(NBN) should be protected from competition, Labor senators say.
Under the government's proposal, NBN Co's rivals would be banned from laying out their
own high-speed cables first.
A Labor-chaired Senate inquiry into key broadband bills agreed, saying other companies
needed to be prevented from targeting lucrative markets and leaving NBN Co with high-cost,
low-revenue customers.
"If this cherry picking of the market were to occur, this would undermine NBN Co's
ability to meet its objective of providing affordable and uniform access to high speed
broadband, to all metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas," the committee said.
But in a dissenting report, Liberal senators on the committee said the rules would
be anti-competitive.
"NBN Co already has a significant advantage as a result of its massive taxpayer equity
contribution," they said.
"Therefore, it's understandable that private competitors argue they should retain a
right to access the relevant markets through building their own infrastructure."
The coalition senators are also backing Telstra's call for NBN Co to be banned from
controlling an internet service retailer.
Liberal senator Mary Jo Fisher said Labor's proposed broadband legislation needed to
be amended so NBN Co could only be a wholesaler.
"Coalition senators are concerned that these latest bills continue to undermine the
government's repeated reassurances that NBN Co will provide wholesale-only services, and
will not compete in any way whatsoever with retail service providers," she said.
Under the government's bills, NBN Co would also be allowed to manage water and sewerage
authorities.
But, Senator Fisher said, this would cut out other retailers from bidding to provide
those services.

NSW:Escort offered hush money over death
A prostitute who witnessed the death of a co-worker during a drug-fuelled sex session
with a Sydney neurosurgeon has told a court he offered her 50-thousand dollars to keep
quiet.
SURESH SURENDRANATH NAIR is charged with the February 2009 manslaughter of 23-year-old
VICTORIA MCINTYRE and the murder in November 2009 of 22-year-old SUELLEN DOMINGUES-ZAUPA.
The women had been hired as escorts by NAIR and the 41-year-old allegedly supplied
both with cocaine in the lead-up to their deaths at his Elizabeth Bay apartment.
A committal hearing's underway for NAIR at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court.
Today Columbian-born CARMEN HERNANDEZ-CARDONA told the court she was hired by NAIR
on November 19 .. .. and she contacted Ms DOMINGUES-ZAUPA to come along after he requested
two girls.
She says all three were snorting lines of cocaine .. supplied by NAIR .. which she
says was strong.
Ms HERNANDEZ-CARDONA has told the court Ms DOMINGUES-ZAUPA started to shake uncontrollably
.. so NAIR gave her a sedative .. and told her he was a doctor and to trust him.
She says NAIR took her mobile phone when she tried to call Triple 0 .. and she saw
Ms DOMINGUES-ZAUPA stop breathing.
She says NAIR called two men who arrived at the apartment a short time later .. and
offered her 50-thousand dollars not to talk about it .. which she refused.
Ms HERNANDEZ-CARDONA left the property a short time later and cashed three cheques
from Nair worth a total of more than 26-thousand dollars.
She later lied over the phone to police .. saying everything was fine when she left.
The hearing continues.

Network Box: Business Internet Traffic to Facebook and YouTube Videos Increasing
Type: News
More business Internet traffic now goes to Facebook than to any other website, according to analysis of 13 billion URLs used by businesses in the first quarter of 2010.
Conducted by managed security company Network Box, the analysis reveals that 6.8 percent of all business Internet traffic goes to Facebook, an increase of one percent since the last quarter of 2009.
According to a release, the top five websites visited by businesses in the first quarter of 2010, and the percentage of all traffic they represent, were:
-Facebook: 6.8
-Google: 3.4
-Yimg (Yahoo!'s image server): 2.8
-Yahoo!: 2.4
-Doubleclick: 1.7
The analysis also shows that more corporate bandwidth -- as opposed to "hits" -- is consumed by YouTube videos than anything else. Employees watching YouTube videos accounted for 10 percent of all corporate bandwidth during Q1 -- up two percent over the previous quarter.
The top five bandwidth-busting websites, and the percentage of all bandwidth they used, were:
-YouTube: 10
-Facebook: 4.5
-Windows Update: 3.3
-Yimg: 2.7
-Google: 2.5
The Network Box analysis comes shortly after the company surveyed 250 IT managers about their biggest security concerns during the coming year. Employees using applications on social networks while at work was the top answer, with 43 percent of respondents saying this is a concern. In a separate question, 36 percent of respondents said they were concerned about malware passed via networks such as LinkedIn or Twitter and employees clicking on links sent by trusted contacts within their networks.
"Downloading applications from social networks can be a serious security risk," says Pierluigi Stella, CTO of Network Box USA. "With social networking usage increasing in the workplace, companies need to set guidelines and to put systems in place that cut the security threat, as well as increase productivity and available bandwidth."

Qld: Plans for new Brisbane CBD

Qld: Plans for new Brisbane CBD
BRISBANE, Dec 17 AAP - A new plan for Brisbane's CBD, incorporating river crossings,
more high-rise living and possible development on Northbank, will be released next year.
Premier Anna Bligh and Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman joined together to announce
a partnership to plan the future of Australia's fastest growing capital to the year 2031.
River City Blueprint, to be unveiled next August, will incorporate existing plans for
Brisbane's inner-city five kilometres addressing living, working and lifestyle issues
for the next 20 years, with the 50 years to 2061 also to be considered.
Ms Bligh said the planning was essential for the coming decades, with 25 per cent of
the city's population and half of all jobs in just six per cent of its area.
"We will need to see some increased density but getting the transport planning right
around that, making the right decisions about rail and other cross-river transport links
will be about improving that livability," she told reporters in Brisbane on Thursday.
She said the government and council would be considering all reaches of the river in
future planning, and that would incorporate Northbank - the site of a scrapped commercial
precinct.
The next pedestrian bridges, cross-river roads, and a new CBD train station would also
be in the mix.
Mr Newman said he hoped the co-ordinated approach - not occurring in other major Australian
cities - would assist the city with asking for federal government money for infrastructure
projects.
"It will get us a lot further ahead of Sydney and Melbourne in showing that there is
a very, very, high-level, strategic, holistic plan with definite linkages between town
planning and infrastructure delivery," he said.
Public comment will be called for once the plan is released in 2010.

NSW: Dock glass to go at terrorism-related trial of nine men
EDS: NO LINK CAN BE MADE WITH THE CURRENT MELBOURNE TERRORISM-RELATED TRIAL.
SYDNEY, Aug 26 AAP - Nine men facing terrorism-related charges may not receive a fair
trial in Sydney if a fixed glass screen remains in front of the dock, a judge has ruled.
In the NSW Supreme Court today, Justice Anthony Whealy said he proposed to direct the
glass be removed for the trial at the new, high-security complex at Parramatta, in Sydney's
west.
Since February, the judge has presided over legal arguments relating to the upcoming
trial, with a jury expected to be empanelled later this year.
Lawyers for the men applied for the glass screen to be removed, expressing concern
it created a "highly prejudicial impression".
Justice Whealy concluded the fixed screen would make it more difficult for the accused
to get a fair trial.
"The screen plainly separates them from the jury and everybody else in the courtroom," he said.
He also noted the screen created problems when the lawyers needed to communicate with
their clients.
Omar Baladjam, Khaled Cheikho, Moustafa Cheikho, Mohamed Ali Elomar, Abdul Rakib Hasan,
Mohammed Omar Jamal, Mirsad Mulahalilovic, Khaled Sharrouf and Mazen Touma have pleaded
not guilty to conspiring to do acts in preparation for a terrorist act or acts.

ACT: Magistrate insists he will sentence HIV-positive prostitute
CANBERRA, April 21 AAP - The magistrate responsible for sentencing a Canberra man who
worked as a prostitute despite knowing he was HIV-positive has refused to stand down from
the case.
Hector Scott, 41, from Kingston, pleaded guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court earlier
this year to providing a commercial sexual service while knowing he was infected with
a sexually-transmitted disease (STD) and failing to register as a sex worker.
But Scott's defence lawyer had asked Magistrate Shane Madden to disqualify himself
from sentencing Scott on the grounds of perceived bias.
The Director of Public Prosecutions had made an application that Scott be registered
as a child sex offender and an affidavit had been written in support of that application.
Scott's lawyer argued because Mr Madden had read the affidavit there could be a perception
he wouldn't bring an "independent mind" to his sentencing role.
But today Mr Madden said that wasn't the case.
"I don't intend to disqualify myself or stand down," Mr Madden said.
"I will apply my functions in a fair and equitable manner."
Scott is now expected to be sentenced on May 27.

EA and The Weather Channel Interactive Team for Real-Time Weather in NCAA Foootball 08
WIRELESS NEWS-August 6, 2007-EA and The Weather Channel Interactive Team for Real-Time Weather in NCAA Foootball 08 (C)2007 10Meters - http://www.10meters.com
Electronic Arts Inc. and The Weather Channel Interactive announced that the recently released NCAA Football 08 features the ability to experience real-time weather conditions and updates through a service provided by The Weather Channel.
The latest version of the college football video game will use up- to-date information from The Weather Channel Interactive (TWCI) to reflect accurate, real-time weather conditions at NCAA stadiums, the companies noted.
If a winter storm threatens the Northeast, the Eagles of Boston College will play through the snow. Hurricane threatens Florida? See how the Gators field goal kicker deals with 50 mph winds. Through a deal with EA SPORTS, the sporting division of Electronic Arts, The Weather Channel will provide real-time weather to the game via the Internet.
"This is a long-awaited feature for gamers - it is the first sports game we know of where actual current weather conditions will affect weather conditions in the game," said Derek Van Nostran, director of marketing for The Weather Channel Interactive. "The Weather Channel Interactive welcomes this opportunity to work with EA Sports to bring an extra dose of realism to the game."
TWCI provides a custom weather data feed to EA SPORTS for each stadium location. Every time a player with a live Internet connection loads a new game, they have the option to choose real- time weather from TWCI. The video game will then use the current conditions at the selected location to create the weather experience for that game.
"We are always looking to add more realism to the game experience," said Jeffrey Luhr, producer for NCAA Football 08. "Adding real-time weather conditions from The Weather Channel interactive truly helps gamers feel 'in the game.'"
Developed by EA Tiburon, NCAA Football 08 is now available in retail stores on the PlayStation2 and PLAYSTATION3 computer entertainment systems, and Xbox and Xbox 360 video game systems from Microsoft.

Fed: Panasonic launches new armoured laptop range
SYDNEY, Feb 12 AAP - Electronics group Panasonic will launch its next generation of
armour-plated notebook computers, which have been built to withstand rough outdoor use
and constant vehicle motion.
This is the Toughbook's fifth incarnation since Panasonic introduced its first laptop
designed to US military specifications for use in the battlefield more than a decade ago.
The latest range features convertible tablet PC and notebook models that are made to
stand up against drops, water and moisture exposure, temperature extremes and constant
vibration.
A wireless display version - which excludes a hard drive and connects wirelessly to
a network hub - is also due to hit the market.
While the reinforced features add a substantial price premium to standard portable
computer technology, Australian Toughbook product manager John Penn said businesses were
becoming increasingly aware of the recurring costs of notebook failures.
"People are now starting to understand the `total cost of ownership' argument," he said.
"Put aside the fact that a unit costs X when you first buy it, what is it actually
going to cost me over the three or four year period that I deploy that in the field?
"What are going to be the warranty costs and out of warranty costs and what's going
to be the cost if I send a unit away for repair and downtime?"
The rugged reinforcements include magnesium alloy cases, sealed keyboards and ports,
reinforced screens, flexible internal connectors and shock mounting.
Both Panasonic's CF-30 notebook and CF-19 convertible tablet have been tested to withstand
drops of up to 90cm while the CF-08 wireless display unit can survive a fall of 120cm.
The notebook and tablet are equipped with an Intel Core Duo Processor L2400 and standard
Bluetooth connectivity.
The Toughbook earned renown four years ago when an earlier model halted a stray bullet
on its path towards a US soldier in Iraq.
But Mr Penn said the market for tougher computers was broadening, with applications
now extending beyond the battlefield and rugged terrains to mainstream industry uses.
Last month, Dell entered the toughened notebook market with its Latitude ATG D620 model.
"The main reasons for failure aren't necessarily somebody doing some extreme sports
with it and it falling down a cliff," Mr Penn said.
"It's the usual stuff you and me would do as well - you've got a bunch of paper under
the your arm and you tuck your notebook under there and it slides out."
The units will retail in Australia in March.

Vic: RSL chief calls for calm after Aboriginal camp threat
By Jamie Duncan and Jane Bunce
MELBOURNE, April 19 AAP - Victorian RSL president Major-General David McLachlan has
urged a group of soldiers to abandon a threat to walk through an Aboriginal protest camp
in central Melbourne.
Maj-Gen McLachlan was responding to an email from a man claiming to be a soldier, received
by Southern Cross Radio broadcaster Neil Mitchell today.
The soldier has threatened to walk through the camp with a group of friends when they
leave the Anzac Day dawn service at the Shrine of Remembrance and go to the traditional
Anzac Day march.
The indigenous protesters set up their camp, dubbed Camp Sovereignty, in Kings Domain
on March 12 to protest against the Commonwealth Games.
They have since refused to leave, despite reprimands from state and federal governments
and council efforts to have them evicted.
Protesters have occupied the park for more than a month, declaring a fire on the site sacred.
The fire is now the subject of a 30-day emergency heritage protection order.
Maj-Gen McLachlan called on the soldiers to abandon their plan.
"It's a stupid idea," he told AAP.
"We're there to commemorate Anzac Day and we do not want any action that would lead
to unacceptable behaviour that would detract from the dignity of Anzac Day.
"I would implore anyone planning this to reconsider because they will not achieve anything.
"I ask everyone to stay calm, let the Aborigines do what they are doing up there and
not interfere with them."
Victoria's acting Premier John Thwaites has urged the Aboriginal protesters to immediately
extinguish their sacred fire and leave the park.
Mr Thwaites said he acknowledged the cultural protection order, upheld by the Victorian
Supreme Court, but said the protest group at Kings Domain should snuff out the fire anyway.
"I don't support the fire, the government doesn't support it," he told reporters today.
"We don't believe it's appropriate for that place.
"But there is a Supreme Court order that does mean the fire is able to be kept alight,
has to be kept alight, under that order for 30 days.
"But I would certainly appeal to those who are there to put it out and do so now."
Last week a Supreme Court judge ordered the protesters to remove camping gear from
the park, but allowed the fire to stay.
Last night, a meeting between Melbourne Lord Mayor John So and the protest leaders
failed to resolve the stand-off over the site.

Joe Miller
Joe Miller (1684–1738) was a popular English comic actor during the early 1700s. He performed at the Drury Lane Theater in London, but his parts were minor. Although his dialogue did not call for many jests, the audience took delight in quoting the witty remarks he made.
A year after Joe Miller's death, a certain Joe Mottley, without permission from anyone, compiled a book titled Joe Miller's Jest-Book, or The Wit's Vade Mecum. The book contained only three jests ever spoken by Miller; the rest consisted of poor puns and dull witticisms. Other publishers jumped on the comic bandwagon, and soon there was a flood of joke books that bore the name Joe Miller. Readers responded the way audiences did to the same joke time after time: “That's a Joe Miller.” The name became a synonym for any timeworn joke.
Joe Miller's memory is being unfairly tarnished when his name is associated with a hackneyed jest taken from this old book. Joe, of course, never saw the book. Furthermore, Joe was unschooled; he could neither read nor write.
