Network Box: Business Internet Traffic to Facebook and YouTube Videos Increasing

More business Internet traffic now goes to Facebook than to any other website, according to analysis of 13 billion URLs used by businesses in the first quarter of 2010.

Conducted by managed security company Network Box, the analysis reveals that 6.8 percent of all business Internet traffic goes to Facebook, an increase of one percent since the last quarter of 2009.
According to a release, the top five websites visited by businesses in the first quarter of 2010, and the percentage of all traffic they represent, were:

-Facebook: 6.8

-Google: 3.4

-Yimg (Yahoo!'s image server): 2.8

-Yahoo!: 2.4

-Doubleclick: 1.7

The analysis also shows that more corporate bandwidth -- as opposed to "hits" -- is consumed by YouTube videos than anything else. Employees watching YouTube videos accounted for 10 percent of all corporate bandwidth during Q1 -- up two percent over the previous quarter.

The top five bandwidth-busting websites, and the percentage of all bandwidth they used, were:

-YouTube: 10

-Facebook: 4.5

-Windows Update: 3.3

-Yimg: 2.7

-Google: 2.5

The Network Box analysis comes shortly after the company surveyed 250 IT managers about their biggest security concerns during the coming year. Employees using applications on social networks while at work was the top answer, with 43 percent of respondents saying this is a concern. In a separate question, 36 percent of respondents said they were concerned about malware passed via networks such as LinkedIn or Twitter and employees clicking on links sent by trusted contacts within their networks.

"Downloading applications from social networks can be a serious security risk," says Pierluigi Stella, CTO of Network Box USA. "With social networking usage increasing in the workplace, companies need to set guidelines and to put systems in place that cut the security threat, as well as increase productivity and available bandwidth."
